JACKSON, Miss. – It didn’t take long for the University of Pikeville to leave its mark in archery on the national level.
The Bears captured three individual titles during the U.S. Intercollegiate championships Sunday.
UPIKE’s three titles are the first in program history.
Andrew Blackburn and Katie Karr were tops in the mixed box while Zach Johnson, Blackburn and Karr captured the basic bow team and Blackburn in the men’s basic bow.
UPIKE nearly earned a bronze in the women’s bowhunter team event. Lauren Burgess, Catelynn McKnight and AmberMayes came up just short, falling to Mississippi College in the medal round.
Kyle Evans and Darcye Ward just missed as well in the compound mixed team, losing out to Kentucky Christian.
The Bears finished third out of 25 teams and had four members earn All-American status.
With all events included, UPIKE finished 3rd out of 25 as a team and had four archers named All-Americans. Those honorees include Devin Gayheart and Johnson in men’s recurve and Evans and Zach Mollett in men’s compound. Archers had to finish among the top eight of their category.
