Vehicle nearly plunges into the river after crashing through guardrail

wreck_2Stanville, Ky.–The southbound lanes of U.S. 23 in the Stanville community of Floyd County were blocked for some time Saturday night as a Silver Ford SUV crossed all four lanes, narrowly missing other motorist, and nearly plunged into the Big Sandy River.

1st witness: “As I was driving home to Pikeville as I came up on Stanville I saw a vehicle coming out of Mare Creek at a high rate of speed and she came in between two vehicles and I thought she was going to stop, but she didn’t and went ahead and hit the guardrail and just went all the way over the hill at a high rate of speed. Never once hit her brakes.”

2nd witness: “I was able to stop on the side of the road, jump out and run down to the riverbank and finally found her about 20 feet short of the river. I looked all around the vehicle and couldn’t see anybody, couldn’t see any windows busted out of it or anything. Finally, one of the guys saw her lodged underneath the vehicle. I went over to that side and we were able to see her breathing, so she was alright.”

Kentucky State Police, the Floyd County Sheriffs’ Department and the Betsy Layne Fire Protection District all assisted at the scene. There is still no word on the condition of the driver.
