Officials are beginning to release the first official account of this morning’s shooting at Marshall County High School, and the situation is proving far worse than initially reported.

Police and Gov. Matt Bevin addressed the media during a press conference around 1:30 p.m. Gov. Bevin confirmed that two students had been killed during the attack, and 12 others were injured by gunshots. A female student died at the scene. A male student died later at a hospital. Five other students were injured in other ways.

The shooter was taken into custody. He is described as a 15-year-old male student at the school. Police say he was armed with a handgun.

Names of the victims and shooter are not being released at this time.

BENTON, Ky. — One person is dead and several others are injured following a school shooting at Marshall County High School this morning.

Kentucky State Police and Gov. Matt Bevin confirmed those details via Twitter, and also said a suspect is in custody. Gov. Bevin also urged the public to avoid speculation until the facts are known.

There are conflicting reports on the number of people injured, with some media reporting the number as high as five.
