The Pike County Schools District will be closed Friday due to widespread illness and low attendance.
Superintendent Reed Adkins tells Mountain Top News that the school district is experiencing low attendance due to several illnesses, including flu and strep, throughout the district. Adkins said the district experienced an attendance rate of 84 percent on Thursday and the decision was made to close Friday and hold a non-traditional instruction day, or NTI Day.
“We’ll close Friday and have the weekend, and Monday is Martin Luther King Jr Day, so we’re hoping that in those four days, we can clean the schools and help slow this down,” Adkins says.
