Whitesburg residents asked to conserve water

For much of the past month, the City of Whitesburg has been dealing with numerous water leaks and line breaks. Whitesburg Water Superintendent Chris Caudill said the recent extended cold weather spell, coupled with the current warmup, has exasperated the problem.

Now, Whitesburg is beginning to run low on its water supply.

Leaks in the city are draining the city’s water tanks, and the system is beginning to fall behind in replenishing those lost water reserves.

A crack resulting from freezing is shown in a water meter removed this week from the Whitesburg water system.

Crews discovered a large leak Tuesday afternoon. They hope fixing that leak will help the water system begin to rebound.

Caudill said the ground in some areas of Whitesburg remains frozen up to 14 inches deep, putting numerous water lines in jeopardy of breaking as the ground thaws and shifts. He said the city’s water problems could worsen as the ground thaws.

Caudill said Whitesburg water customers should check around and under their residences for possible leaks and report any leaks immediately. He added that customers should also conserve water when possible.
