Prosecution objects to relaxing release conditions for Amber Spradlin defendants

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The prosecution has weighed in on requests by defendants in the Amber Spradlin murder case for more lenient release conditions and has come out against them.

Spradlin’s body was found June 18, 2023, at the Arkansas Creek home of Prestonsburg dentist Michael McKinney. McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, has been charged with her murder, while both McKinneys and family friend Josh Mullins are charged with multiple counts of evidence tampering for allegedly trying to cover up the crime.

M.K. McKinney has been held in jail on a $5 million bond since his arrest, but this week was granted a reduced bond that would require him to post $2 million worth of property and $400,000 in cash. However, his attorney requested an even lower bond, saying he could only post either $500,000 in cash or $1 million worth of property and $400,000 in cash.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner said his office remains opposed to lowering M.K. McKinney’s bond, saying it has already been reduced significantly.

Turner also expressed opposition to requests by Michael McKinney and Mullins to be released from home incarceration. Turner says the fact that they have complied with conditions since their release from jail on bond is a strong argument for keeping things as-is, rather than changing them.

Special Judge Eddy Coleman is expected to issue a ruling on the requests at any time.

Turner’s responses to the motions follow:
