After a day-and-a-half manhunt, the man suspected of killing Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton was captured Thursday morning.
About 36 hours after Officer Hamilton was gunned down in the line of duty late Tuesday night, the man believed to have been the one to pull the trigger, 55-year-old John Russell Hall, was taken into police custody. Hall was arrested at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday in Pike Floyd Hollow at Betsy Layne.
Kentucky State Police Post 9 Captain Donnie Shearer said Hall was taken without incident.
Hall, of Hurricane Road in Pike County, had been on the run since Hamilton, a 12-year-veteran of the Pikeville Police Department, was shot and killed at Hurricane Creek. A massive manhunt ensued, and culminated in Hall’s capture, which was caught on video by a Pike Floyd Hollow resident, Thursday morning.
Shearer said his troopers, as well as other law enforcement officers, were relieved to take Hall into custody. Several other people were arrested with Hall, but Shearer said none of those arrests were in connection to Officer Hamilton’s death.
Hall was held at KSP Post 9 in Pikeville for questioning into the evening Thursday, and was then lodged in the Pike County Detention Center. Captain Shearer said numerous agencies took part in the search for Hall and the investigation that followed Hamilton’s death.
Officer Scotty Hamilton leaves behind a wife and 9-month-old baby girl. He was 35.
