PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — An Alabama man is in jail after Kentucky State Police shut down an attempt to bring fentanyl into Eastern Kentucky.

State troopers received a report that Frederick Daniel Holt Jr., 50, of Gadsden, Ala., was bringing fentanyl into Johnson County and planning to sell it from his hotel room at the Days Inn in Paintsville. Investigators learned he was staying in room 108 and arranged to have an undercover informant make a purchase from him.

Once the purchase was made, police arranged to pull Holt over and take him into custody, then took him back to the hotel room. He consented to a search and police say he cooperated by showing them where they could find three bags of fentanyl and admitting that it belonged to him.

Holt has now been arrested on charges of importing fentanyl and aggravated fentanyl trafficking. The trafficking charge carries a potential sentence of 10-to-20 years in prison.

Holt is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville on a $25,000 cash bond.
