The City of Jenkins has collected thousands of dollars in revenue from the sale of packaged alcohol since it was made legal last year.
Packaged alcohol sales began in Jenkins in the first quarter of 2017. For the last two quarters of 2017, and as it is now, two stores sold packaged alcohol. Jenkins Mayor Todd DePriest said the alcohol sales have added more than $6,000 to the city’s coffers.
DePriest said the city received approximately $3,100 in revenue from alcohol sales in the third quarter of 2017. In the 4th quarter, the city saw a slight increase to approximately $3,300 in revenue generated from packaged alcohol sales. The mayor said he’s glad those revenues are being collected now in Jenkins rather than in other places, such as Wise County, Virginia.
DePriest said the revenue generated by alcohol sales must be used on either the city’s police department, or on administration of the alcohol sales. He added that the city has not experienced any uptick in crime since alcohol sales began last year.
