Elkhorn City attorney Timothy Belcher appears in court on theft charges

An Elkhorn City attorney accused of stealing more than $800,000 dollars from clients, made his first court appearance on Monday.  Timothy Belcher appeared before Special Judge Alison Wells in Pikeville and entered a not-guilty plea.  Prosecutors say Belcher’s clients, who were children at the time, were awarded the money after their father was killed in 2001.  The theft was recently discovered when one of the children, who is now an adult, attempted to contact Belcher to access the funds that belong to her.  Pike Commonwealth’s Attorney Bill Slone told Mountain Top News the account, which should have contained over $800,000, was nearly empty.  A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for November 12th.   Tim Belcher remains free on a $20,000 dollar surety bond.
