McDOWELL, Ky. — A mudslide on Kentucky Route 122 in Floyd County closed the roadway for several hours, Tuesday, as crews from Highway District 12 worked to clear debris.

Officials say during the next few weeks, constant changes in the weather will cause mountains to become unstable and slide.

“It’s that time of year,” said Highway District 12 Information Officer Sara George. “People need to be alert and realize that these things can slide out in the road or fall down in the road at any time.”

Officials remind motorists to be cautious in areas that are prone to slides. They say, residents should know where mudslides typically occur.

“When you see cones or signs that say ‘road work ahead’ or ‘lane closed ahead’ or ‘long delays ahead’ or something, please pay attention to them,” added Sara George

If there is a slide during an everyday commute, officials ask to be patient.

“People need to understand that it’s a temporary inconvenience and we’re working as quickly as safety will allow, but we can’t let traffic through in situations like that because it isn’t safe.”

Crews are working until dark to fix the slide on Route 122. If it’s not cleared by then, crews will pick back up first thing Wednesday morning.
