Man considered armed and dangerous following Letcher chase

A police chase in Letcher County has resulted in police warning the public about a potentially dangerous fugitive.

According to court documents, Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Sidney Fields attempted to stop 38-year-old Sherrell Sandlin, of Whitesburg, for a seatbelt violation before Sandlin sped away in his vehicle. A chase followed that eventually led onto Pert Creek Road in Whitesburg.

Police say Sandlin nearly collided with an oncoming vehicle and also drove in reverse at one point, nearly striking the deputy. Police say Sandlin eventually abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot and escaped. He is now wanted on wanton endangerment charges, as well as meth trafficking charges, after the drug was allegedly found in his vehicle.

Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Eugene Slone said the situation is an example of how a simple traffic stop can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation.

Police are advising the public not to approach Sandlin, who is considered to be armed and dangerous. If anyone knows Sandlin’s whereabouts or spots him, they are advised to contact police immediately.
