PIKEVILLE, KY.-During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Pike County Fiscal Court, representatives of the Galen College of Nursing were on hand to deliver some good news for area children living with diabetes. The school has received a grant from the National Diabetes Foundation to pay for diabetic children from Appalachia to attend the Center for Courageous Kids a special summer camp for children living with health issues. The grant even includes transportation to and from camp. Organizers say campers have all the traditional fun of summer camp, along with some important lessons.
“When I first visited it just blew my mind. They have indoor swimming facilities, indoor bowling facilities. But better than that, they teach the kids to be independent with their disease and also to learn more about it and how to control it. That way when they grow up they are better able to take care of it. Kentucky is one of the worst states in the nation for diabetes. Actually my mom was diagnosed with diabetes just a few months ago. So what can we do to help change the lives of these kids and help them understand that being different doesn’t mean you have to be different.”
The camp is open to children aged 7 to 16. For more information, you can contact the Center for Courageous Kids at (270) 618-2912 or go to www.courageouskids.org
