Wise County, VA — Sheriff Ronnie Oakes and Assistant Sheriff Grant Kilgore have announced that the Wise County Sheriff’s Office has received four state grants that will fund additional School Resource Officers in Wise County Public Schools. These grants are funded through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Two of these grants will continue to fund the School Resource Officers for the Wise County Career/Technical School, Regional Learning Academy, and Alternative Education Center located in Wise, VA and Union Primary School in Big Stone Gap, VA. The two additional grants are new awards that will fund a School Resource Officer for Wise Primary and Coeburn Primary Schools. Since 2015, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office have added six new SRO positions with grant funds and two additional ones funded by Wise County, resulting in twelve deputies assigned as School Resource Officers. Total grant funds for these six positions will be over $1.3 million.
