
Several areas of Letcher County experienced isolated flooding Tuesday evening.
Tuesday’s heavy rains caused flash flooding in areas including the Payne Gap-Kona area along U.S. 119, and areas in the Neon and Seco communities.
According to the National Weather Service, radar indicated that some 3 inches of rain fell on those areas in a matter of about an hour. The result was some homes receiving water damage, and some folks having to be rescued from rising waters.

In Webb Branch, water rushed across the roadway and into some residences, including that of Dianna Holbrook. Holbrook said three to four feet of water rushed through her front yard, and water poured into her bedroom.
Emergency responders entered Webb Branch after receiving a report of a stranded motorist. The motorist was rescued prior to emergency responders arriving.
Two men were rescued by a county backhoe from a stranded pickup truck in nearby Bill Moore Branch.

At Charlie White Lane off U.S. 119, families were led out of their flooded community by first responders from Mayking, Neon and Jenkins. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the flooding.
Payne Gap resident Darrell Easton thanked first responders for coming to his and his family’s aid.
Damage assessments from Tuesday’s flooding are ongoing. According to the National Weather Service, more wet weather is on the way later in the week, and it could impact areas which were flooded Tuesday.
