A bill seeking to cap the cost of insulin prescriptions in Kentucky is moving forward in the Kentucky General Assembly.
House Bill 12 passed the Kentucky House of Representatives by an unanimous 92-0 vote on Wednesday and now advances to the Senate for consideration. According to the Legislative Research Commission, the bill would cap patient cost for a 30-day supply of insulin in Kentucky at $100 per prescription. The bill’s primary sponsor, Republican Rep. Danny Bentley of Russell, says the typical cost for a month’s supply of insulin could cost as much as $1,200 for a patient.
“I use insulin. A box of Lantus is over $300 dollars,” says Bentley, who is also a diabetic, himself. “So if you use four boxes a month, that’s $1,200.”
According to LRC, an amendment to HB12 was filed by Republican Rep. Steve Sheldon, of Bowling Green, which also helps prohibit insurers from from increasing patient cost of insulin prescriptions that fall below $100. The amendment was adopted in the House by a voice vote.
