The Letcher County Schools District has changed its plans for the start of the upcoming school year.
At the July meeting of the Letcher County Schools Board of Education, the board voted to begin the school year with all-online instruction, rather than welcoming students back into the classroom. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Superintendent Denise Yonts announced that the all-virtual learning plan was being utilized “out of an abundance of caution.”
The district had planned on using a hybrid in-person and virtual learning plan which would have seen students attending in-person classes two days per week and taking part in virtual learning the other three days. The school district’s starting dates remain the same, with staff members reporting to work Aug. 17 and students beginning online classes Aug. 26.
Yonts says the district hopes to welcome students back into the classroom as soon as possible.
“We are dedicated to moving to in person instruction on our scheduled rotations as soon as it is safe,” Yonts said in the post. “Each school will create a schedule for students to pick up Chromebooks and school supplies. Please contact your child’s school for specific information.”
