PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville Medical Center is teaming up with the Pikeville Police Department in order help raise money for it’s community outreach program.

As the saying goes, you have to spend money to make money. Typically, when hosting a race, you must first use the proceeds made at the event to pay for the race expenses and then the rest can go to the specific fundraiser. However, PMC’s physicians and medical staff have agreed to pay for the the entire cost of hosting a race. All proceeds made from the event will then go directly to the police department’s community outreach program.

“We go out to each, not only our schools in the city limits, we take care of those well enough, we wanted to reach out and go to all the 13 elementary schools in the county,” said Pikeville Police Chief Chris Edmonds.

“We went to their coordinators, asked them to get us a list of things that kids need. Didn’t matter what it was. It could be food, it could be clothing, it could even be a ruler.”

Pikeville Medical Center’s Run with the Cops 5K will be held Saturday, June 2nd at Bob Amos Park. Registration will begin at 6:30 that morning and the race will start at 8.

“Poverty rates are explosive in the Appalachian area,” added Pikeville Medical Center’s Dr. Fadi Alakhrass. “We know all these rural communities are in need for social services. It doesn’t matter whose going to sponsor these programs. Either governmental, or private-operated, it doesn’t matter. They need the money and they need a budget in order to be able to feed these kids.

“We know some of these kids mainly go to school just to eat unfortunately. The school system at this point, especially in the rural areas, are suffering and struggling to find a sponsorship to be able to pay for the meals.”
