Man arrested after chase through two counties

Robert Thomas Smith

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Johnson County man was arrested after leading Prestonsburg Police on a chase that ended with a crash.

It all began Monday afternoon, when police received calls of a fight on the side of U-S 23, near Tiger Mart. Before police could respond, one of the men involved got into a car and drove away.

Police spotted him at the intersection of Route 114 and North Lake Drive in Prestonsburg and attempted to pull him over. Instead, the driver hopped a median and sped away.

That resulted in a chase reaching speeds of over 100 miles an hour down U.S. 23 into Johnson County. The driver then turned onto Route 1428, where the driver lost control in a hairpin curve and flipped several times.

After allegedly attempting to flee on foot, police finally arrested 41-year-old Robert Thomas Smith, of Van Lear. He is now charged with DUI, fleeing police, wanton endangerment and numerous other charges related to the case, as well as outstanding felony warrants in Martin County.
