CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man who authorities say has been deported from the United States four times before is now facing federal criminal charges after being arrested last month in Mingo County.

Edwin Alexander Canales-Gomez, 39, was indicted Tuesday in U.S. District Court on charges of re-entry of deported alien and possession of a firearm by an alien illegally in the country.

According to the indictment, Canales was found to be in the country illegally in 2005 in Laredo, Texas; in 2008 in Eagle Pass, Texas; in 2019 in Calexico, Calif.; and in 2021 in Eagle Pass, Texas. Each time, he was deported to Honduras.

On April 28, he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Williamson. He is also accused of being in possession of a 9 mm handgun when he was arrested.

Canales is currently being held in the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston.
