PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Mingo County man faces charges of vehicular homicide and assault, following a DUI crash Friday afternoon.
Police say Chad Blackburn, 36, of Red Jacket, showed signs of impairment following the crash, which occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 119, near the intersection with U.S. 23 in Pikeville. After failing a field sobriety test, he was immediately arrested for DUI.
Following the arrest, he was then charged with vehicular homicide and first-degree assault, after the driver of the other car died and a passenger in that car sustained serious injuries.
Police then obtained a search warrant for his car and found 6 grams of suspected heroin and a vape pen believed to contain marijuana concentrate.
The vehicular homicide and assault charges are both Class B felonies, punishable by 10-to-20 years in prison.
Blackburn is being held without bond in the Pike County Detention Center.
