ABINGDON, Va. — A southwest Virginia mother and daughter have been indicted on federal health care fraud charges, after the daughter received Medicare money for being a caretaker for her mother and grandmother, even though she was in jail at the time.
Desari Schossig and Rhonda Beach are each charged with health care fraud, conspiracy to commit health care fraud, and 20 counts of wire fraud.
According to the indictment, Schossig was hired as a caretaker for both Beach and her grandmother.
From January to 2014 to September of 2019, Schossig was incarcerated, but prosecutors allege Beach and the grandmother continued to submit and approve time sheets to Medicare on her behalf.
In all, Schossig was paid more than $20,000.
Both women are scheduled to appear in court next month.
