Officials open new park for special needs children in Letcher County

Officials in Whitesburg celebrated the opening of a new “Sensory Park” with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Whitesburg Mayor James Craft said that the park was acquired after a group of mothers who have children with autism was able to secure a $65,000 matching grant. Craft said that the construction took approximately four months and city officials are very proud of the park.

According to Craft, one of the highlights of the park is that it is placed on top of a four inch rubber base to help protect the children in case they fall. Most of the equipment in the park is also geared towards children with special needs.

The park is located next to the Whitesburg city swimming pool, and all children are welcome.
