WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell will miss this year’s Fancy Farm Picnic as he continues recovering from injuries suffered in a fall earlier this summer.

In a statement released Monday, the Kentucky Republican said he is continuing an intensive physical therapy program and will be unable to attend the annual political event in western Kentucky.

“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky,” McConnell said, adding that he looks forward to returning to both the Senate and Kentucky soon.

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell continues to recover from a fall at his home in June and remains in a rehabilitation facility. Doctors said he undergoes multiple physical therapy sessions each day to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls.

According to the physician’s office, McConnell’s childhood bout with polio continues to affect his mobility, and he has not yet been medically cleared to return to work or leave the rehabilitation facility.
