PIKEVILLE, Ky. – On Thursday, nine high school teams pitched plans for how they would establish a new business on a previously mined site in eastern Kentucky. CEDAR, Inc. organized the program, now in its second year. It’s called the Entrepreneurial Coal Lands Redevelopment Program, and it is designed to challenge students to tackle real problems facing our region today. The students have been working on the projects presented on Thursday for the past seven months. The team from Phelps High School won the competition and walked away with a $3,000 prize. Their business idea was a solar farm called “Solar Ridge,” built on top of a reclaimed strip job that would lower electricity costs for struggling families.
