The Phelps Hornets recently earned what is popularly being called the Kentucky State Championship for the best high school football helmet.

The tournament, organized by twitter user @CoachCollettLC pitted teams across the state against each other to find out who had the best helmet in a time where the nation is starved for sports content.

According to social media posts, Head Coach Andrew West and his Hornets will be presented with a golden helmet award.

“It feels good for our team to be recognized for our helmets statewide,” West said. “Phleps hasn’t always had the best equipment to play in so it’s nice to be on the other end of that for a change.”

West said that the team helmet was designed to have a classic look with a modern twist.

“We’ve got a flat gray to match our jerseys perfectly, and just through our hornet logo on the side. The modern twist is the award decals. I was trying to figure out how to make our helmets unique and I just ordered us some honeycomb stickers and that would form a hive as the season went along and the boys got achievements,” West said.

Phelps edged out Crittenden, taking away sixty-eight percent of the nearly three-thousand votes in the championship to win the tournament. 

West said the win is nice, but he doesn’t think it’s going to play a factor into the upcoming season. 

“It doesn’t matter what your helmet looks like when the lights come on,” West said. “I will say that it gives them a little more pride wearing that gray and blue because it’s something that was voted on by people around the country and the state.”
