RICHMOND, Ky. — A deadly shooting that killed a man and woman stunned residents of Madison County on Tuesday, and the shockwaves are being felt in the mountains.
Pike County natives Chris and Gracie Hager, who were considered pillars of the community in Richmond, were shot and killed outside of a duplex on Keystone Avenue.
Police say that Thomas Birl, 51, who rented half of the duplex from Chris Hager, shot the couple multiple times, before barricading himself inside. That prompted a standoff with police that lasted four hours, until officers fired powdered gas rounds into the residence and forced him out.
Before leaving, police say Birl set fire to the building, causing severe damage.
Birl was taken to a hospital afterward.
The investigation into incident is continuing.
