PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man and woman have been sentenced to 12 months in jail for stealing grave decorations.

Douglas Gooslin III, 57, and Kristie Bentley, 45, both of Belfry, were formally sentenced on Thursday.

The two were accused of taking more than $2,000 worth of grave decorations from graves at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy over a period of three years. Graves that targeted included fallen state trooper Johnathan Leonard; his mother, Karen Leonard; and former University of Pikeville student-athlete Tyler Williams.

Back in January, they entered Alford pleas to charges of violating graves. An Alford plea functions as a guilty plea, but defendants using it do not admit guilt, although they concede that the evidence against them would likely result in a conviction.

The pair is currently being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
