PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A man accused of shooting and killing another man at the Auxier bridge back in April will not see his bond reduced, a judge ruled on Thursday.

Larry Johnson, 68, of Auxier, is charged with murder for the April 25 shooting of Steven Adkins, 48, of Prestonsburg, while the two argued near the Auxier bridge.

Johnson has been held on a $1 million cash bond since his arrest. He unsuccessfully asked to have it reduced back in August, but his attorney, Ned Pillersdorf, filed another motion for a bond reduction after reviewing evidence in the case.

According to the new motion, evidence in the case suggests Adkins hit Johnson in the face prior to the shooting, knocking his glasses off. The motion also noted that the defense plans to introduce evidence that Adkins had a bad reputation for violence, especially when under the influence of meth, and that toxicology reports show he had meth in his system.

Assistant Attorney General Floyd Anthony Skeans opposed the motion, saying there has been no material change in the circumstances around the case.

On Thursday, Floyd Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris overruled the defense motion, keeping the bond at $1 million.

Another hearing in the case is scheduled for Nov. 20.
