PIKEVILLE, Ky. (MTN) — In hopes of assisting students who may not have internet access in their households, the City of Pikeville is increasing their bandwidth capabilities within the city.
Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter says that the idea was created due to the large amount of students who don’t have access to the internet or reliable internet service.
“What the city is trying to do at this point is up our broadband bandwidth in several locations in downtown areas, so these students that may not have access to the internet at home, they can come to the city park and the Appalachian Wireless Arena plaza and parking lot,” states Carter.
Additionally, the Appalachian Wireless Arena will be providing indoor access with tables set up between 9 AM – 5 PM in the lobby during inclement weather.
Mayor Carter adds that even though students can access free WiFi in the parking lot and plaza of the arena, social distancing and masks are required both indoors and outdoors to combat the spread of COVID-19.
