PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville Police are giving the public a heads-up that if you see a large police presence near Pikeville High School or elsewhere in the community today, there is no cause for alarm.

Police and emergency medical responders are taking part in an active shooter training exercise beginning this morning.

“Citizens should not be alarmed by the large police presence at the school and other locations as there are no threats at this time,” the City of Pikeville said in a statement. “The training exercise will ensure police and EMS are up to date on the most effective responses should tragedy ever strike our community.”

The statement adds that local first responders hope to never have a need to use the lessons they learn in the training, but it is vital they be prepared just in case.
