HAZARD, Ky. — A Perry County man planned to make a brief trip to the police station on Tuesday, but he ended up staying much longer.

Elmer Ray Shell, 33, of Viper, went to the Hazard police department Tuesday morning to retrieve a gun police were keeping. While he was there, police ran his information and determined he was wanted on outstanding warrants.

After he was arrested, he asked an officer to retrieve two weapons in his car for safekeeping. When the officer did so, she thought she smelled marijuana, so she called in a drug dog to check the car.

That led to the discovery of 62 grams of meth, 19 grams of cocaine, less than 5 grams of marijuana, and two foil packets of heroin.

Shell will now face additional charges in relation to the drugs.
