Police investigating road construction vandalism

It is not uncommon for barrels or signs in road construction areas to be damaged on occasion by passing motorists.  However, Monday’s vandalism of a construction zone in Pike County has gotten the attention of the police.  Mountain Enterprises is the contractor for the paving work being done on US 23 south of Pikeville, and officials there say they are working with the State Police to identify those responsible.  Sometime around 3am Monday morning, every barrel was damaged or destroyed and several signs were stolen on both the north and southbound lanes of US 23 along a 2 mile stretch near Penny Road.  The damage estimate is several thousand dollars, but Mountain Enterprises officials say they are taking this case serious because of the danger motorists faced during the time the barrels and signs were not in place.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the State Police at 606-433-7711.
