NEW YORK, N.Y. — A New York jury has found former President Donald Trump civilly liable for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996.

Because the verdict comes in a civil lawsuit, the former president will not face any jail time. However, he has been ordered to pay Carroll $5 million.

The verdict was mixed. The jury determined that Trump did not rape Carroll, as she had alleged, but that he had sexually abused her.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching its conclusion.

Trump has maintained his innocence and called the lawsuit a “hoax” and a “scam.” He responded in much the same way after the verdict, posting on his Truth Social account that the verdict was a “disgrace” and that the lawsuit was part of a “witch hunt.”
