Potentially explosive drug bust

Sandy Hook, Ky: While conducting drug investigations police officers usually have an idea of what they can expect. However, Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 8 found the unexpected while investigating a call involving a Lawrence County man. It happened when officers responded to the call of a family member, reporting him for trying to break into their Brushy Creek Road residence in Sandy Hook.

Police say when they arrived on scene they found 29-year old Travis Matthews of Webbville, outside of a single room shack. When officers approached Matthews they say he was talking and twitching a lot. He allegedly told officers he had taken heroin, but thought it was actually meth and had been awake for days. After Matthews gave Troopers permission to search the shack, they found what they believed to be a pipe bomb. The KSP Bomb Squad was called in and confirmed that it was in fact a pipe bomb. They also found a blasting cap inside the shack. During the search, syringes, small bags and filters that tested positive for meth were also found.

Matthews was arrested and charged with possession of a destructive device or booby trap, wanton endangerment of a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and public intoxication. He was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
