WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joe Biden on Saturday took action to provide additional assistance to victims of the 1,000-year flood that caused widespread devastation across Eastern Kentucky and killed at least 25 people.
One day after declaring a major disaster in Breathitt, Clay, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike and Wolfe counties, the president added individual assistance to the types of aid available.
Gov. Andy Beshear said on social media after the announcement that, so far, Breathitt, Clay, Knott, Letcher and Perry have been aproved for individual assistance. Those counties were among the hardest hit by flooding and also the locations that have had fatalities. However, Beshear also said he expects additional counties to be approved for individual assistance.
The initial declaration allowed for federal help to local governments in dealing with the disaster. Individual assistance was authorized by the president’s second action and allows assistance to individuals and businesses, primarily in the form of low-interest loans.
