Skynyrd, Hank Jr cancel Pikeville concerts due to virus concerns

A pair of legendary musical acts have cancelled fall performance dates in Pikeville due to concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

According to Facebooks posts, both posted Friday, southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd and country music legend Hank Williams Jr. have cancelled shows at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville scheduled for later this year. Lynyrd Skynyrd was scheduled to perform in Pikeville on Sept. 10 and Williams was scheduled to perform Oct. 23.

Williams had been scheduled to perform at Appalachian Wireless Arena during Hillbilly Days, which was also postponed due to the pandemic. Williams also announced on Friday the cancellation of an Oct. 24 performance in Salem, Virginia, just outside of Roanoke.

According to the Facebook post on Williams’ page, the cancellations are “out of an abundance of caution,” and offer no tentative rescheduled dates. According Williams’ website, several concerts, including one in Atlanta at the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park, is still scheduled to take place July 18. Georgia has taken an aggressive approach to reopening during the ongoing pandemic.

According to the Lynyrd Skynyrd Facebook page, the southern rockers are cancelling 14 dates on the U.S. leg of the band’s 2020 “Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour,” including the Sept. 10 Pikeville concert. According to the post, health and safety concerns factored into the decision.

“There are too many unknown factors and questions to be able to move forward at this point,” the post says. “The band also has high risk members, so the safety of the fans, band and crew are a priority.”

The post also says the cancellations are in consideration of the current economic situation in the country.

“With the current economic struggles (30 million unemployed) we felt it was prudent to get the ticket refund money into the fan’s hands, that may need that ticket refund revenue, now,” the post says.

According to the band’s website, Lynyrd Skynyrd still has tour dates scheduled in Europe and in other cities in the U.S.

Both Williams and Lynyrd Skynyrd offered hope the performers’ respective cancelled concerts will eventually be rescheduled.
