Student investigated for using AI to create inappropriate images of classmate

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — An incident at Prestonsburg High School this week is shedding light on the potential for a new type of threat from artificial intelligence.

In a statement provided to Mountain Top News after questioning about the incident, the Floyd County School District says school officials are working with law enforcement following an incident involving AI-generated images and video connected to students.

School staff say they first became aware of the situation earlier this week after a verbal disagreement among students.

An internal review found inappropriate images and videos of a student were created off campus and outside of school hours, but all students involved attend Prestonsburg High School, including the student who created the content.

Because of the nature of the material, the school’s resource officer was notified. After reviewing the case, the matter was referred to a Court Designated Worker.

The Floyd County School District says it is cooperating with law enforcement and will follow all guidance from the appropriate authorities, adding that student and staff safety remains a top priority.

District officials are also urging parents to talk with students about responsible use of phones, social media and digital platforms, reminding families that online actions can cause lasting damage and carry serious disciplinary and legal consequences.
