Sandra R. Anderson, 37, and Shawn D. Maynard, 32, both of Pikeville, were arrested by the Pikeville Police Department. According to court documents, the two entered the Old Regular Baptist Church eating hall on Ferguson Lane.

The citation states Maynard smelled smoke and when he turned around, Anderson had allegedly started a fire inside the building and was standing beside it.

“Once [fire department personnel] got on scene, they extinguished the fire and started their investigation,” said Pikeville Fire Chief Patrick Bentley. “They found drug paraphernalia laying around in the dining hall. That’s when they called police department officers.”

“We started investigating. Once we go inside, we find evidence that it’s been broken into. We see that there’s a clothes pile with chairs broken up and the legs broken off of a table in a corner,” said Pikeville Police Patrolman Chad Branham. “There’s some other things laying there that appeared like they had stacked things together to start the fire with.”

The two were arrested and lodged in the Pike County Detention Center. Both were charged with third-degree burglary. Sandra Anderson was also charged with third-degree arson.

More charges and possible arrests are pending in the case.
