PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Virginia man is accused of stealing a truck and leading police on a chase that resulted in U.S. 23 being shut down in Coal Run Village for most of the day.
Jamie Alvin Rife, 51, of Jewel Ridge, Va., in Tazewell County, is accused of stealing a Chevy Silverado from the parking lot of Road-Tested garage Wednesday morning.
After the theft was reported, Pikeville Police spotted the truck on Hambley Boulevard and attempted to pull it over, but it sped away instead. The truck fled through Cedar Creek and Hurricane Creek before returning to U.S. 23 at Boldman and heading back toward Pikeville.
During the chase, Rife is accused of nearly striking several police officers.
He was finally stopped at Coal Run Village.
When he was taken into custody, police say he had a white powder in his nose. He reportedly admitted to police that he had snorted Norco and was coming down off of meth and heroin.
He has been charged with theft, DUI, fleeing police, wanton endangerment and other charges.
