VOLLEYBALL: Betsy Layne Outlasts Hazard in Five-Set Thriller & Area Scores

Betsy Layne battled to the very end Monday night, outlasting Hazard in a five-set thriller to take a 3-2 victory.

The Lady Bobcats dropped the opening set 25-19 but clawed their way back, winning the next two 26-24 and 25-23. Hazard forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-23 win, but Betsy Layne held firm, edging out an 18-16 final to seal the match.

Junior standout Jayden Jarrell once again fueled the offense, finishing with 28 kills and a serving ace. She was backed by senior Harlyn Slone, who added nine kills and an ace. On the defensive end, sophomore Kaylee Parsons recorded four blocks, while eighth grader Kennedi Allen and junior Aubrey Williams chipped in two each.

For the season, Jarrell now sits at 280 kills, averaging 4.83 per game, while Slone has 58. Parsons has 24 blocks, Allen 14, and Williams 36.

The win lifts Betsy Layne to 10-8 overall. The Lady Bobcats return to the court tonight at Paintsville, with first serve set for 6 p.m.

Elsewhere Monday night, Johnson Central defeated Paintsville 3-1, Letcher Central swept Pikeville 3-0, Prestonsburg outlasted East Ridge 3-2, and Shelby Valley topped Pike Central 3-0.
