Memorial Day weekend has arrived, and numerous remembrance ceremonies will be held across the nation.

In Whitesburg, the city and its veterans got a head start on commemorating the somber holiday. At the Whitesburg Veterans Memorial Park Friday afternoon, city and county officials joined officials from the Letcher County Veterans Museum and students from Letcher County Central High School to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The ceremony is held each year in the city around Memorial Day. Whitesburg Mayor James Craft, who spoke at the event, said those who have served their country are heroes deserving of recognition.

A 21-gun volley and a firing of a cannon marked the occasion, with Letcher Central JROTC cadets performing ceremonies in honor of those who died in service to the United States.
