The city was selected as one of winners in the Levitt Amp Your Town Music Series challenge, and will receive a $25,000 grant to fund a 10-week free concert series in the city. Organizers of the effort to attract the series to Whitesburg said the town is the smallest among the winners, and also finished first in online voting in November for the series.
The concert series will be held this summer in downtown Whitesburg. Berea and Middlesboro were also named as winners to receive the grant.
The Cowan Community Center submitted the proposal for Whitesburg to be awarded the grant, and will be in charge of bringing the Levitt Amp Whitesburg Music Series to life. Performances are expected to be held on the Mountain Heritage Festival stage.
“We are thrilled to announce the 2018 Levitt AMP Grant Awards winners. Each made a compelling case for how the Levitt AMP Music Series will create vibrancy in a public space and strengthen the social and economic fibers of their communities,” said Sharon Yazowski, Executive Director of the Levitt Foundation, in a press release from Letcher County Tourism. “Mountain Heritage Festival Stage is the ideal place for the Levitt AMP Whitesburg Music Series, shining a light on this underused public space and furthering the town’s revitalization efforts, while creating a welcoming destination for everyone in Whitesburg and the surrounding communities to enjoy.”
