WW II Submarine Located, Local Man Onboard

Prestonsburg, KY — A missing World War II submarine has been located in the waters off Okinawa, Japan. According to On Eternal Patrol, the wreck of USS Grayback (SS-208) was discovered by an exploration team led by Tim Taylor. Onboard was 27-year-old Lieutenant Commander Carthel Hill Smith, Jr. from Prestonsburg, Kentucky. According to Japanese information, a Japanese plane spotted the submarine and attacked, sinking the Grayback on February 26, 1944. Smith was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
