PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pikeville woman has been arrested after police say she attacked her mother with a meat cleaver.

Police were called just after 5 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment on Saad Avenue over the attack.

When they arrived, they found the victim standing in the living room, bleeding profusely from her left arm. Two children with her, one of which was covered in her blood.

Police learned that the two women had been arguing over cleaning the apartment and a custody issue regarding the children, when Katie Hurley, 24, allegedly hacked her mother’s arm with the meat cleaver and then fled.

Hurley was found driving on Hambley Boulevard a short time later. She was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a minor.

The assault charge is a felony punishable by 5-to-10 years in prison.

Hurley remains in the Pike County Detention Center.
