PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Maysville man was arrested in Prestonsburg early Sunday morning, after a traffic stop turned up a sizable quantity of fentanyl.

A Prestonsburg police officer was patrolling just after midnight, when a deputy radioed him to let him know that the car behind him had been involved in drug trafficking in the past. The officer allowed the car to pass him, then ran the vehicle’s plate. He learned that the owner of the car had a suspended license, so he pulled it over.

It turned out that the owner was not driving, but the officer noticed a back seat passenger — identified as Zachary Wayne Mason, 33, of Maysville — appeared nervous. A drug dog was deployed and alerted on the vehicle, prompting a search that turned up more than 47 grams of fentanyl and nearly 2 grams of crack cocaine in the area where Mason was sitting.

Mason denied selling the drugs, saying they were all for personal use, but police also found a gun, cash, digital scales and a number of plastic bags. He was arrested and charged with aggravated fentanyl trafficking, cocaine possession and other charges.
