SOUTH WILLIAMSON, Ky. — A Mingo County man told police he only propositioned two Kentucky teens in the hope that they would kill him.

Kentucky State Police received a call Thursday night reporting that a man in an orange pickup truck approached his 17-year-old son and another 17-year-old outside of the Southside Mall, asking if they wanted him to perform sex acts on them. Afterward, the man left the scene and drove back to his home in Williamson, prompting KSP to request assistance from the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, identified as John L. Smith Jr., 60, agreed to meet with KSP voluntarily.

When asked about the incident, the police report says Smith admitted to approaching the boys, but said he could not tell how young they were because it was dark. The report says he further told police he had been feeling depressed and suicidal lately, and his only hope in propositioning the boys was that they would hurt or kill him in response.

Smith was arrested on charges of attempted unlawful transaction with a minor, harassment and loitering, all of which are misdemeanors. He continues to be held in the Pike County jail.
