Virginia issues unemployment scam warning

The Virginia Employment Commission has issued a warning that scammers are targeting the unemployed.

The scammers are contacting people drawing unemployment insurance by phone and email, in an attempt to get their personal information. The calls and emails appear to come from the U.S. Department of Labor or the Virginia Employment Commission.

The agency notes that its staffers will never ask for all nine digits of a Social Security number for identification purposes.

Anyone who feels they have been targeted by a scammer is encouraged to report it to the Federal Trade Commission at identitytheft.gov.
