Kentucky State Police were called just before midnight, Tuesday, to a report of a shooting on West Fifth Street in Elkhorn City. There, they found 44-year-old George Standifur shot in the leg, but armed with a gun and threatening to kill police.

Witnesses told police that Standifur, who lives in a camper along the street, broke into a neighboring house, held a gun to an occupant’s head, and threatened to kill the family living there. The man was able to get the gun away from him, but police say Standifur pulled another gun, stuck it in the man’s face, and pulled the trigger.

The gun didn’t go off.

That’s when the occupant of the home shot Standifur in the leg with his own gun and forced him out of the house. The police report says after he was shot, Standifur pointed the gun at a woman and pulled the trigger, but it didn’t fire then, either.

Back in the alley, police negotiated with Standifur for several hours before he finally put his gun down just before 4:30 Wednesday morning. Police then arrested him and charged him with two counts of attempted murder, four counts of wanton endangerment, and other charges.

He is being held in the Pike County jail on a $150,000 cash bond.
