PIKEVILLE, Ky. — An attempt to get a traffic violation tossed out has resulted in a southwestern Virginia woman now facing a misdemeanor forgery charge.

Angel Dellinger, 51, of Honaker, Va., was pulled over in Pike County last July and charged with a number of traffic violations, including no insurance. According to court records, Dellinger called the county attorney’s office Monday, saying she had proof of insurance and asking for a fax number so she could send it to them.

The next day, the office received a faxed picture of the insurance card. But authorities were suspicious of its authenticity, because they said even in the picture it looked “clearly manipulated.” Not only that, but in the picture they could also see a printout of instructions on how to make an insurance card look legitimate so it wouldn’t be checked.

To confirm their suspicions, authorities contacted the insurance company, which confirmed that the policy number listed on the card has been canceled in 2012.

Dellinger was then charged with third-degree forgery. Court records indicate after she was arrested, she confessed to making the fake card, saying she had asked her sister-in-law to help her with it.

She now faces up to 12 months in jail, if convicted of the forgery charge.
